Building a Reading Life, Grade 3, Unit 1 Revisions

We want to share with you a draft of the revised grade 3, unit 1, Building a Reading Life that uses Indian Shoes by Cynthia Leitich Smith as the read aloud. The author is an enrolled member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. This is a lovely, contemporary book of interconnected stories featuring humorous and heartwarming experiences of the characters Ray Halfmoon, a Seminole- Cherokee boy, and his Grampa. We are excited to share how the short stories in Indian Shoes lend themselves beautifully to the character and prediction work of the unit.

We urge you to use Indian Shoes and to enjoy this beautiful text with your students. While we have made critical literacy lessons accessible in the Heinemann online resources that helps students to recognize and question the stereotypical portrayal of the character Stone Fox, we do not recommend the continued use of Stone Fox. We will update this draft to include excerpts from Indian Shoes directly in these sessions as soon as we’ve received permission from the publisher. For now, we’ve alerted you to the page numbers and passages to use in each session.
