Adapting Units of Study for English Language Learners Institute

Monday, October 2 — Tuesday, October 3, 2017

Grade: K-5
Featuring: Amanda Hartman, Marie Mounteer, Jennifer Kean Thompson, Colleen Cruz

The TCRWP is excited to offer this institute devoted to adapting Units of Study for English Language Learners. The institute is designed to help you lead state-of-the-art reading and writing workshops using Units of Study while also attending to the ways workshop structures and teaching are supportive of English Language Learners.

You will learn to weigh the varied needs of your students and consider the various adaptations that will pay off. You’ll study minilessons, read aloud and shared reading plans, thinking about how to use these to support language goals for your students. You’ll also study student work in order to track progress and needs and to plan for instruction.

In addition to whole group instruction, the presenters will help you to consider your conferring practices so that students are given support that is strategic and identifies students’ most significant needs. Similarly, you’ll spend time thinking about methods of instruction for small group teaching to support your English Language Learners. You’ll develop a series of plans that provide decreasing scaffolds across time and you’ll learn how to guide your students as they work on their reading and writing during workshop time.

This institute will take place at the Teachers College campus.
