5th Annual Digital and Media Literacy Institute Grades K-8
Thursday, May 16 - Saturday, May 18, 2019
Featuring: Cornelius Minor, Colleen Cruz, Katy Wischow, Eric Hand, and Rachel Rothman
This institute, which offers first year and advanced sections for participants, will focus on the Project’s latest thinking around the integration of digital and media literacy with tried and true reading and writing workshop methods and curriculum. It will introduce participants to our latest and most successful methods for authentically tapping the power of digital tools and media within the workshop classroom in an aim to foster digitally literate students. Instructors will show how new media can dramatically affect regularly taught concepts in writing, such as the role of the audience and importance of supporting ideas with evidence. You will also learn how to effectively use multimodal texts to increase comprehension, as well as digital and media production within the reading and writing workshop. Across the institute, you will not only learn how to support students as self-navigators and digital citizens, you will also advance your own digital literacy skills, while engaging in your own reading and writing of multimodal texts.
This institute will also discuss media literacy, supporting strategies for media criticism, and ways to authentically integrate author’s intent or purpose across the various types of texts readers encounter. A particular emphasis will be placed on balancing expectations for high-quality work and process while working with dazzling new mediums. The goal of this institute is for participants to leave with armloads of strategies, resources and ideas for bringing 21st century learning back to your schools.
We are excited to build on the energy and excitement from our past institutes, and plan to share our best work from last year’s institute in addition to our revised and latest thinking.
