Running Records

Individual Running Records can be found in the Resource Center by clicking the Explore Assessments button. Use the search function to find individual records (eg. A1, A2, B1, etc).

Running records are one glimpse into what children do as readers. A running record can give teachers helpful information about a child’s fluency, accuracy, and literal and inferential comprehension of a text, information that can be used to support that child’s reading growth. Running records consist of two sets of assessments for each reading level, A-Z.

The teacher versions of the assessments are downloadable for all levels. The student versions are downloadable for levels L-Z. For levels A-K, where students need access to the illustrated text, the student books can be ordered from Kaeden Publishing. Please make use of the implementation manual which provides directions, examples of retells and summaries, frequently asked questions, and grade level benchmarks. You will find suggestions for giving the assessments, analyzing student responses, and learning as much as possible about your readers.

Many teachers are interested in using a phonics assessment in addition to some of the other assessments used, such as concepts about print, letter-sound identification, high-frequency words, running records, and so on.
