Advancing Literacy

TCRWP congratulates all of the schools recognized this year by the US Department of Education as part of The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program. These schools are chosen for their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing the student achievement gaps.

The schools recognized this year include communities whose students, teachers, and leaders demonstrated resilience, resourcefulness, and a constant commitment to each other and to learning and adapting during one of the most challenging school years in recent memory. These schools not only believe in children’s right to education but in providing students with a place to become critical thinkers and learners, lovers of reading and writing, and self-motivated individuals who have the knowledge and skills to engage intentionally with our ever-changing world—and remaining true to those beliefs is what makes each of these schools so worthy of the recognition of being named a Blue Ribbon School.

In addition, these schools’ work with TCRWP has been crucial in not only shaping those beliefs, but in demonstrating the myriad ways their TCRWP partnership made it possible for their students, teachers, leaders, and TCRWP itself to thrive in the face of immense adversity. TCRWP is grateful to work alongside these schools to problem solve and continue to envision and work towards a future that is more equitable and just, and to see their dedication to their work with TCRWP has been inspiring. These schools rose to the many challenges the world was confronted with in the past year and came out stronger, making their students all the more prepared to take on the future.

We are honored that 4 schools recognized this year are part of the TCRWP community. Those schools are:

PS 41 Greenwich Village, District 2 Principal Kelly Shannon

PS 234 Independence School, District 2 Principal Dana Rappaport

PS 290 Manhattan New School, District 2 Principal Doreen Esposito

PS 249 The Caton School, District 17 Principal Elisa Brown

In addition, TCRWP is specially pleased to congratulate Principal Elisa Brown on being selected as a 2021 recipient of the Terrel H. Bell Award for Outstanding School Leadership. Recipients of this award are selected for their outstanding school leadership, dedication to the field of education, and visionary work to transform their school. Principal Brown exemplifies these qualities in her leadership, and TCRWP is honored to work alongside her. The Terrel H. Bell Award for Outstanding School Leadership is presented at the National Blue Ribbon Schools ceremony on Thursday, November 4 by the U.S. Department of Education, with the National Association of Elementary School Principals, the Association of Middle-Level Education, and the National Association of Secondary School Principals, in memory of former U.S. Secretary of Education Terrel H. Bell.
